Week 5, Guided reading "The Seed" - Phonics Phase 3 - Worksheet
English Resource Description
In the fifth week of the All Aboard Phonics programme, the guided reading focus is on the non-fiction book titled "The Seed". The comprehension component of the lesson includes questions that encourage children to think about the information provided in the text. They are asked to recall the name given to the writing on the back of a book, discuss the requirements for a seed's growth, and remember the events that occurred to the seed within the story. The questions also prompt learners to consider the size of seeds, the potential for a single seed to grow into a wood, and the origin of seeds. Additionally, the importance of rain and sunlight for the germination and growth of seeds is explored.
Alongside the comprehension questions, there are bonus queries that invite children to think more broadly about the themes of growth and the natural world. These include reflecting on other things that start small and become beautiful, understanding the significance of trees, considering how to care for trees, recognising other life cycles, and sharing personal experiences of planting seeds. The worksheet titled "Terrific Trees" complements the reading material by asking the children to colour in and label the stages in the life cycle of a tree, starting from a seed to a fully grown tree. Teaching notes highlight that "The Seed" is the first non-fiction book in the series, and suggest a discussion about the differences between fiction and non-fiction texts. The activities for the week also include grapheme practice, quiet reading, and the hands-on experience of planting seeds to observe their growth firsthand.
